What is Sanctum (CLOUD)?
Sanctum is a protocol that specialises in liquid staked tokens (LSTs) within the Solana blockchain ecosystem. Its native asset, CLOUD, serves as a governance token. Sanctum provides core staking infrastructure designed to streamline the creation, trading, and management of LSTs, featuring dedicated solutions such as the Infinity protocol, a Reserve Pool, a Router, and a decentralized exchange (DEX).
Sanctum introduces several unique innovations that differentiate it from traditional liquid staking protocols:
- The Sanctum Reserve: Instead of relying solely on deep secondary market pools to avoid high slippage or requiring users to endure a multi-day cooldown to unstake, Sanctum provides an efficient redemption mechanism. Users swap their staking account with the Sanctum Reserve for immediately liquid SOL, while the protocol deactivates the stake account to recoup SOL over the cooldown period.
- Capital Efficiency: By eliminating the requirement for every single LST to bootstrap its own deep liquidity pool, smaller or newer validators can launch liquid tokens and stay competitive alongside large market players.
- Infinity Protocol & Validator LSTs: Sanctum facilitates a unified ecosystem accommodating diverse LSTs, enabling users to deposit SOL or liquid tokens to receive yield-bearing assets while tokenizing validator efficiency.
The primary utility of the CLOUD token is protocol governance. Prospective partners are required to stake CLOUD in order to qualify for the Sanctum Verified Partner program. In addition, CLOUD holders have voting power to decide which partners are admitted into the program.
Sanctum operates on the Solana blockchain, which relies on a Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism. When SOL is staked through Sanctum, it is delegated to validators that confirm transactions, secure the network, and earn staking rewards alongside MEV rewards.
The Sanctum project went live in April 2023. It was created to solve core staking and liquidity inefficiencies on Solana, specifically by removing the burden of creating isolated liquidity pools for each token. This allows small, newly established, or ambitious validators to compete with large incumbents and creates a more decentralized, competitive validator set.
Sanctum addresses several key frictions in traditional liquid staking:
- Illiquidity and Unstaking Delays: Unstaking typically requires a 2- to 4-day cooldown period, while trading on secondary decentralized exchanges can incur significant slippage without immense liquidity.
- Validator Centralization: Without deep liquidity pools, small or emerging validators struggle to launch viable LSTs. Sanctum solves this by using its shared Reserve Pool to let users instantly swap staking accounts for SOL, lowering barriers for validators and improving network decentralization.
Yes, Sanctum is 100% open-sourced. In addition to public accessibility of its code, the protocol has been formally audited by the security firm Sec3.
The CLOUD token distribution was structured through specific allocation categories:
- Launch Liquidity (20%): 10% distributed via an initial airdrop and 10% dedicated to seed liquidity in the LFG launch pool (proceeds and unsold tokens return to the Strategic Reserve).
- Community Reserve (30%): Governed directly by the community.
- Strategic Reserve (11%): Reserved for ecosystem development, grants, partnerships, strategic investors, and market liquidity.
- Team (25%): Vested over time, unlocking 33% one year post-TGE and the remaining 67% monthly across years 1–3.
- Investors (13%): Follows the same 3-year vesting schedule as the team.
- Jupiter LFG (1%): Allocated for sale on Jupiter's LFG platform.
Sanctum scales with the growing adoption of Proof-of-Stake, as increased participant staking inherently expands the security of the underlying network. To ensure fast and dependable transaction execution, Sanctum also offers dedicated infrastructure products like Gateway, engineered to deliver transactions reliably across the network.
Yes, Sanctum has practically no negative impact on the environment. Because its underlying yield and infrastructure derive from Solana's Proof-of-Stake consensus model, it is highly energy-efficient compared to Proof-of-Work networks like Bitcoin.
Sanctum's governance model is driven by CLOUD token holders and multisig security controls. Community members govern 30% of the total token supply via the Community Reserve and vote on protocol admissions, such as which applicants are accepted into the Sanctum Verified Partner program. From a protocol security standpoint, Sanctum is secured by a 5-of-8 Squads V3 multisig structure.
Sanctum aims to serve as the foundational infrastructure powering Solana's liquid staking ecosystem. Its long-term vision centers on fostering a broad and cohesive staking environment where any project or institution can launch custom LSTs and white-label validators, maximizing staking yields, capital efficiency, and validator decentralization across Solana.
