What is Loopring (LRC)?
Loopring is an open-source Layer-2 protocol built on Ethereum designed to scale and build decentralised crypto exchanges (DEXs) as well as robust payment rails. It functions as a DEX featuring both Automated Market Maker (AMM) and orderbook-based exchange models. By utilizing modular zkRollup (zero-knowledge rollup) technology, Loopring performs computations and executes transactions off-chain while using Ethereum exclusively as a data and verification layer to ensure non-custodial security.
Loopring sets itself apart through several innovative technical features:
- Order Ring Technology: Unlike conventional trading systems that swap direct pairs of two tokens, Loopring uses order rings of up to 16 individual orders. This aggregates liquidity, improves price efficiency, and settles trades without needing an exact matching pair.
- Commercially Viable Orderbook DEXs: By moving computation off-chain via zkRollups, Loopring delivers up to 2,025 trades per second at settlement costs as low as $0.00015 per trade. This provides the speed and low fees needed for professional traders and algorithmic bots to operate on a non-custodial DEX.
- Asset Tokenisation Services (ATS): A service that bridges assets not directly available on the DEX, allowing ERC-20 tokens to be traded against physical assets or tokens from other blockchains.
LRC is the native ERC-20 utility token powering the Loopring protocol, serving five core functions:
- Miners and Relays Rewards: Serves as the reward mechanism for ring miners and relays managing orders and network liquidity.
- Governance Rights: Grants holders voting rights on protocol development updates.
- Token Burning: Used in mechanisms for burning tokens.
- Exchange Lock-ups: Required for lock-up periods to operate a decentralized exchange on Loopring.
- DEX Operator Staking: Staked by DEX operators to lower trading fees on their platform.
Loopring promises to dramatically improve Ethereum scalability through a hybrid design that manages orders centrally while settling trades on-chain. This architecture enables commercially viable, high-performance orderbook-based DEXs that operate with lower fees, higher throughput, and reduced custodial risk, empowering non-custodial platforms to compete with and displace centralized exchanges.
Loopring was created by software engineer Daniel Wang, who serves as the company's CEO alongside Jay Zhou (CMO) and Johnston Chen (COO). Wang studied computer science at the University of Science and Technology of China and Arizona State University, and previously held engineering roles at Google, JD.com, and Boston Scientific, in addition to co-founding Coinport Technology Limited.
Loopring was developed to solve Ethereum's throughput bottlenecks and eliminate traditional DEX inefficiencies—such as slow speeds, high transaction costs, and custodial risks—by migrating transaction execution off-chain.
The LRC token was generated during its Initial Coin Offering (ICO) in August 2017, which raised $45 million. The Loopring protocol was subsequently deployed on the Ethereum mainnet in December 2019.
You can use the LRC token in several ways across the Loopring ecosystem:
- Staking: Stake LRC as a DEX operator to lower trading platform fees.
- Governance: Vote on protocol development proposals and network updates.
- Running Exchanges: Lock up LRC to operate a decentralized exchange on top of the Loopring protocol.
- Earning Fees: Relays and ring miners earn LRC as protocol rewards from Layer-2 transactions and swaps.
Loopring tackles critical limitations found in both centralized and decentralized exchanges:
- Ethereum Network Congestion: Ethereum's base layer throughput is limited to roughly 15 transactions per second, making trading slow and prohibitively expensive.
- DEX Inefficiencies: Traditional DEXs suffer from fragmented liquidity, high slippage, and an inability to support order books or high-frequency algorithmic trading.
- Custodial & Centralization Risks: Centralized exchanges expose users to counterparty risks, malicious internal actors, and regulatory vulnerability. Loopring solves this by offering high-speed off-chain execution with non-custodial, on-chain settlement.
Yes, Loopring is an open Layer-2 protocol designed for scaling and building decentralized exchanges on Ethereum, utilizing public smart contracts and open relay node software.
LRC tokens were generated through protocol smart contracts and launched via an Initial Coin Offering in August 2017. The initial token allocation was distributed as follows:
- 50% to investors (698 million LRC)
- 20% to the Loopring team
- 20% to the Loopring Ecosystem Advancement Fund (LEAF)
- 10% to contractors, auditors, and exchanges
Circulating supply issuance is governed by smart contracts, and new rewards are earned by relays and ring miners through transaction and swap fees (where 80% goes to relays and their affiliates, and 20% to protocol fees).
Loopring provides exceptional scalability by employing zkRollup technology to batch and compute transactions off-chain. While base Ethereum processes around 15 transactions per second, Loopring achieves a throughput of up to 2,025 trades per second. This massive scaling reduces the trade settlement cost to approximately $0.00015 per trade.
Loopring features a decentralized governance model where LRC token holders possess voting rights to decide on protocol development updates, parameters, and network improvements.
Loopring's long-term vision is to facilitate DEX building across multiple blockchains, exponentially improving throughput and replacing centralized exchanges. By combining the speed of centralized order matching with the security and transparency of decentralized settlement, Loopring aims to provide commercially viable, non-custodial platforms that empower professional algorithmic traders and everyday users alike.
