What is Tokenised GBP (TGBP)?
Tokenised GBP (tGBP) is a British Pound-pegged stablecoin issued by BCP Technologies Ltd., a UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)-registered firm. Maintaining a transparent 1:1 peg to the British Pound Sterling (GBP), tGBP is 100% collateralised by cash and cash equivalents, including fiat and short-term zero-coupon bonds issued by HM Treasury.
Available across multiple networks such as Ethereum, Solana, Base, Arbitrum, Polygon, BNB Chain, Gnosis Chain, and Avalanche, tGBP enables 24/7 global access to sterling-denominated liquidity on-chain.
tGBP distinguishes itself through several key characteristics:
- UK FCA-Registered Issuer: It is the first and only British Pound-pegged stablecoin issued by a firm registered with the UK Financial Conduct Authority (BCP Technologies Ltd.).
- Robust 1:1 Backing: Every token is fully collateralised by cash, cash equivalents, and short-term zero-coupon bonds issued by HM Treasury, verified through monthly independent reserve attestations.
- Audited Infrastructure: Its smart contracts undergo regular security audits by OpenZeppelin.
- Native Multi-Chain Presence: Rather than being restricted to a single ecosystem, tGBP operates natively across eight active chains, including Ethereum, Base, Solana, Arbitrum, and Polygon.
Tokenised GBP serves multiple functional utilities across digital finance:
- On/Off-Ramp Liquidity: Provides a direct GBP-denominated route for exchanges and payment service providers facilitating moves between bank funds and crypto assets.
- DeFi and Programmable Transactions: Can be integrated into decentralised finance protocols and programmable financial applications.
- Real-World Asset (RWA) Settlement: Operates as a sterling purchasing and settlement asset for tokenised funds, government bonds (such as $GOVY), money market funds (MMFs), and real estate.
- Cross-Border Remittances: Acts as the sterling settlement layer for cross-border payment corridors, enabling international value transfer within minutes instead of days.
- Multi-Chain Liquidity: Allows users to move GBP value across multiple blockchains without rebuilding currency channels for each individual chain.
Tokenised GBP was created and issued by BCP Technologies Ltd., a crypto-asset firm registered with the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
It was created to bring the British Pound onto the blockchain, establishing a regulated, transparent, and 1:1 reserve-backed digital currency. This enables instant settlements, cross-border remittance corridors, on-chain sterling payments, and exposure to GBP-linked Real-World Assets (RWAs).
According to the official Tokenised GBP website, the token has been live since May 2025.
Tokenised GBP can be utilised in several ways:
- Minting: Eligible businesses can mint tGBP by transferring British Pounds directly from a UK bank account via Faster Payments or CHAPS to receive tokens at a 1:1 ratio on their chosen blockchain.
- Trading and Exchanges: Available for trading and liquidity on supported cryptocurrency exchanges such as Kraken, Coinbase, and Bitpanda.
- DeFi Applications: Integrated across supported smart contract networks for use in decentralised finance protocols.
- RWA and Fund Settlement: Institutional users can transact tokenised funds and bonds via platforms such as Archax.
- Global Transfers & Redemption: Transferred globally 24/7 across supported chains or redeemed back to fiat GBP at any time.
Tokenised GBP solves several key friction points present in traditional banking and digital asset rails:
- Slow Cross-Border Transfers: Traditional cross-border settlements run through correspondent banks and take 3 to 5 business days, restricted by business hours and cut-off times. tGBP completes transfers in minutes, 24/7.
- High Intermediary Fees: Conventional rails incur costs across multiple intermediaries and foreign exchange layers; tGBP streamlines this using direct digital settlement.
- Fragmented Sterling Liquidity: tGBP addresses the lack of a compliant, regulated British Pound stablecoin across modern blockchain networks, providing frictionless GBP connectivity for exchanges, PSPs, and tokenised real-world assets.
tGBP tokens are generated through a 1:1 fiat-backed minting process:
- Eligible businesses transfer GBP from a UK bank account using Faster Payments or CHAPS.
- Custodied funds are held with banking partners in the UK and backed by cash, cash equivalents, or HM Treasury short-term bonds.
- Upon receipt of fiat funds, an equivalent amount of tGBP is minted directly to the user's wallet at a strict 1:1 ratio on their selected blockchain network.
